According to the magazine “Fit for Fun”, the new dairy trend food Skyr is a favourite of supermodel Karlie Kloss because of its low fat content. Another great advantage is the high protein content which makes it a perfect snack for children to support muscle building while growing. This is why Skyr has become increasingly popular as a dairy product for children.
Q-Meieriene (Q Dairies) is a Norwegian producer of dairy products and has just launched a Skyr®* (*Skyr® is a registered trademark in Norway owned by Q-Meieriene, using Orignial Icelandic Cultures) products range for children and another low-sugar yoghurt range for adults and children alike. What is special about these products is that they are packaged in a very innovative way – preventing mess and other disadvantages that liquid dairy products may have when consumed on-the-go.
“We are very proud that Q-Meieriene chose Constantia Flexibles as a supplier for the new liquid pouch material”, said Karsten Bang Regional Sales Manager at Constantia Flexibles. “Liquid Pouches are a new and highly convenient plus cost-effective way to pack for example yoghurt and other dairy products that could be potentially messy when eating them. This is why stand up pouches have become increasingly more popular as an alternative to rigid packaging lately”, said Gerwin Schalk responsible Business Development Manager for Stand-up pouches at Constantia Flexibles.
“We are extremely happy to be able to package our new Skyr® and yoghurt products in a new way with the innovative material supplied by Constantia Flexibles. It has been a great project to develop this alternative packaging method together with the experts from Constantia and have been able to gain a considerable market share of yoghurts catered especially to children already in the first month after the release,” said Ingrid Humlung and Øystein Skreien, Brand Manager’s from Q-Meieriene.
Advantages of Constantia Flexible’s pouch materials:
It is a great on-the-go solution to prevent messiness. The pouch has very easy opening and closing solution which is a clear consumer advantage. Besides this convenience, our pouch also offers best barrier properties on reel, which is important when it comes to product hygiene. There is a refill option which can be interesting for producers and the CO2 footprint is constantly being improved thus offering a more sustainable packaging option.
What is Skyr?
Skyr is the traditional yogurt of Iceland. It is made by incubating skim milk with live active cultures. The whey, the water naturally found in milk, is then strained away to make for a much thicker, creamier, concentrated yogurt. So to make just one cup of skyr, with all that water going out, you need 3 - 4 times the amount of milk required to make a regular cup of yogurt. As a result of this process skyr comes out with 2-3 times the protein count of standard yogurt.
Q or Q–Meieriene is a private Norwegian dairy. It was founded in 2000, and consists of two dairies, namely Jæren Gårdsmeieri and Gausdalmeieriet. The two dairies process milk from about 500 farms, totaling 170,000 litres of milk daily (2006). Processed products include milk, chocolate, yogurt, sour cream, cream and juice.
