120+ tons of coffee capsules collected in Austria
Recycling project sets a benchmark
Imagine a world where your morning coffee contributes to a more sustainable future. In Austria, this vision is becoming a reality as used coffee capsules are transformed into new ones. The Austrian Coffee and Tea Association (KTV) and Altstoff Recycling Austria AG (ARA), with the support of key industry partners including us, Constantia Flexibles, have embraced this challenge with remarkable success.
In just six months, more than 9 million coffee capsules, equating to 120.33 tons, were collected in pilot regions, marking a 22% increase since the project’s launch in October 2023. This ambitious recycling initiative is supported by leading coffee producers, retailer Billa Plus, and packaging manufacturer Greiner Packaging. Due to its success, the initiative has been extended until the end of June 2024.
The project not only raises awareness about recycling but also contributes to resource conservation. Capsules are processed at the SECCON facility in Upper Austria, separating coffee grounds for biofertilizer and turning capsules into new aluminum or plastic products. This initiative underscores the significant potential of circular solutions in Austria’s economy.
A pioneering effort for the circular economy
"In support of Austria's circular economy, we embrace a holistic approach across the entire packaging value chain. We are pleased to have applied our expertise in this pilot project, turning collected aluminum capsules into new products," said Thomas Schulz, Vice President of Group Marketing & Communication at Constantia Flexibles.
Paul Unterluggauer, KTV Vice President, and Harald Hauke, ARA board spokesperson, praised the strong collaboration and consumer participation that drove the project's success. Industry partners also highlighted the benefits of the initiative, noting its positive reception and impact on sustainable practices.
The project's future looks promising, and evaluations are underway for further expansion. This pioneering effort in the EU sets a benchmark for innovative recycling solutions.
