ASI turns 5!
ASI turns 5! As a founding member, we congratulate the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) on 5 years of work fostering responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium along the entire value chain!
Constantia Flexibles is founding member of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), a global, multi-stakeholder, non-profit standards setting and certification organization fostering responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. Starting in 2010, we drafted the first ideas with a handful of people. Registered in 2015, ASI is the result of producers, users and stakeholders in the aluminium value chain coming together with a commitment to maximizing the contribution of aluminium to a sustainable society. Now after 5 years, it is great to see how far ASI has come with over 130 members and many of our suppliers already being ASI certified. Congratulations on 5 years of work for more responsibility along the entire aluminium value chain!
The ASI Standards
ASI’s standards apply throughout the supply chain, from mining through to downstream sectors that use aluminium in their products. The ASI certification program is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain.
The ASI Performance Standard defines requirements regarding environmental, social and governance sustainability for entities and facilities engaged in the aluminium value chain. Critical sustainability impacts in the aluminium value chain, such as GHG emissions, biodiversity management, indigenous rights, etc. are addressed, with the objective to promote measurable and continual improvements. The ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard was launched to connect assurance about business practices under the ASI Performance Standard, to claims about aluminium and responsible sourcing.
ASI at Constantia Flexibles
In 2018, our largest plant Constantia Teich in Austria became the first aluminium foil roller and packaging converter and the first European company to be certified according to the ASI Performance Standard for environmental, social and governance performance. In addition, Constantia Teich successfully achieved ASI Chain of Custody certification in early 2020.
ASI provides a scalable solution that allows us to be part of a broader movement toward greater sustainability, with more impact than individual actions can achieve. ASI helps to improve transparency and traceability for companies to monitor and report on progress toward sustainability goals and responsible sourcing.
For us, it is an important measure to work towards our science-based GHG-emission reduction target (covering absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG-emissions) and to provide our customers with products of lower environmental impact. Furthermore, ASI was one of the drivers that initiated internal projects, such as the biodiversity assessment which we conducted for all our plants (assessing our impact on potential species loss) or the revision of our Code of Conduct for Suppliers with regards to responsible sourcing.
Looking forward to seeing what the next five years will bring!
