JDE Peet’s accelerating sustainability agenda via paper pack for soluble coffee
A sustainable shift: less packaging, lower carbon footprint
JDE Peet's brands Kenco, Douwe Egberts, and L’OR launched new paper refill coffee packs in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Designed for recycling, these packs represent a substantial packaging advancement as they seek to create a more sustainable ecosystem in the soluble coffee market by incentivizing the reuse of existing glass jars and tin formats. Moreover, the coffee from these new paper packs will generate the lowest carbon footprint within the existing range of JDE Peet’s products.
Sharing our deep commitment to sustainability, JDE Peet’s has been instrumental in leading the coffee industry's shift towards preserving coffee quality with paper packaging. Our team at Constantia Flexibles proudly collaborated with JDE Peet’s to bring this groundbreaking solution to life. The newly designed paper refill packs, made up of 85% paper, effectively provide a high barrier against oxygen and moisture. They also ensure strong seal integrity, essential for preserving the freshness of coffee. This achievement is especially significant, given the complexity of creating effective barrier properties with paper-based packaging.
Beyond their functional merits, these packs are also designed with environmental responsibility in mind, being easily recyclable in standard paper waste streams, where available. The structure was also certified as recyclable by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). By replacing existing packaging with these paper pouches, JDE Peet’s is leading and redefining sustainable practices in the coffee industry. This step marks a significant leap towards eco-friendlier solutions, setting a benchmark for others in the market.
